Kids in Parks

Diabetes Free SC is providing funding to enable the statewide expansion of Kids in Parks, an award-winning program of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. Kids in Parks works with community partners to convert existing trails into TRACK Trails. These updated trails include free, self-guided challenges to make hiking and the outdoors a more engaging experience for kids. The funding will allow Kids in Parks to install one new TRACK Trail and two new TRACK Trail Mini sites in all 46 counties of South Carolina by 2026.

Funding supported development of a mobile app so that kids and families can engage with the program wherever they have access to a safe place to be physically active. This program is growing a network of school nurses and pediatricians participating in Track Rx, a park prescription program that supports providers in encouraging their youngest patients to get outside and be active.

Today, nearly 50 TRACK Trails are open across the state, with the expansion continuing in 2025.

The Kids in Parks TRACK Trail program gets thousands of kids and families outside and moving together each year. Each TRACK Trail opening brings a community together and leads one step closer to every county having safe places to explore and share in outdoor physical activity.
